Whether you’re framing a photograph or a baseball pennant, design matters and custom matting can make a big difference in the final product. FrameStore offers a variety of mat styles and sizes, from standard size matting to custom size or mats with multiple openings.
You can achieve a great effect with one mat, but sometimes it can make sense to use multiple mats in a framed piece. For instance, you can use two mats to represent the school’s colors when framing a senior portrait along with the tassel and graduation invitation. (That’s also a good time to use mats with multiple openings to accommodate each piece of memorabilia that you’re framing!)
It may seem like just putting your art, old photographs or other treasured items under glass is protection enough. However, here’s where the matting you choose really matters: Regular paper mats have been treated to prevent the acids that are naturally present in the wood pulp from damaging the items that are being framed, but that protection only lasts about 5 years. After that, the acid-controlling treatment no longer works. As a result, the mat could begin to cause some yellowing!
Archival matting is acid free from the beginning, so you won’t have to worry about this type of mat damaging your framed piece. At FrameStore, we use rag mat made from cotton that is 100% acid-free. This type of archival mat board is ideal when you want to be sure your artwork, photos or other framed items are not just beautifully framed, but also protected for the long haul.
Other Custom Matting Options
What do you have in mind for your framing project? FrameStore offers many options when it comes to the color and texture of your custom mat. We can cut matting to fit standard size or nonstandard sized frames, and we can also cut mats with off-center openings to add drama to your framed piece, or multiple openings if you want to showcase more than one piece in the same frame.
With every framing project we try to tell a story and to communicate something unique about you, your family or your interests. One of the things that sets us apart as a framer is that you don’t just deal with a sales clerk -- you talk directly with one of our experienced design consultants, who can help you choose the frame, matting and color scheme that will work best for your piece.
