| Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain represents the artist’s first major retrospective and a contribution to the substantial growing body of scholarship on contemporary Native artists. Bartow (Mad River Band Wiyot) established his art career in the 1980s following service in Vietnam and a period of recovery from PTSD and alcoholism. His work consists of large-scale paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures that often feature haunting combinations of animal and human forms, and are often both deeply personal and culturally relevant. Divided into thematic sections such as “Self,” “Dialogue,” and “Tradition,” this exhibition speaks directly to the personal and cultural aspects of traditional Native art within Bartow’s oeuvre while demonstrating his close engagement with the work of 20th-century masters, including Francis Bacon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. |
 B. Wurtz:This Has No Name1717 E. 7th StreetLos Angeles, CA 90021Through February 3, 2019 This Has No Name is the first major U.S. museum survey of New York-based sculptor B. Wurtz (b. 1948). For over forty years, Wurtz has developed a visual language that subverts the industrial austerity of Minimalism and centers the minutiae from daily life in ways poetic and whimsical. B. Wurtz’s idiosyncratic work in sculpture and assemblage revolves around the use of objects that refer, directly or indirectly, to the “acts of eating, sleeping and keeping warm,” inspired by an early drawing.  Tinkering ClubreDiscover CenterGrand Park200 N Grand AveLos Angeles, CA 90012Through December 5, 2018 Grand Park’s Winter Glow is a new month-long, immersive nighttime art experience that will take over Grand Park in celebration of the holidays. As the days shorten and darken, the park will celebrate light as a giver of warmth, a source of beauty and the key component to bringing people together during the fall and winter months. Families will make new holiday memories strolling together through this 12-acre art, projection and light display, exhibit and installation and experience the wonder of Grand Park lit up like never before. Iconic elements of the park, including the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain, will shine in new and exciting ways. Familiar pathways will lead to exciting new discoveries as the latest in light and projection technology transforms spaces in the park. |

| This month’s FrameStore story comes to us from our Hermosa Beach store. No longer in the Target Center, the store has relocated about a mile and a half south on PCH, in the new design area of the South Bay. Tucked amongst, some great interior design establishments, such as, Kate Lester Interiors, Learned Lumber, and next door to Amirian Home, a high-end retailer of fixtures and tiles, our Hermosa location looks to make a huge wave. FrameStore’s consultant Richard Eyman has had many interesting projects already. As you can imagine, ocean/beach themed, but one project stuck out. Our client Jim, a native of Hawthorne, and Sociology professor for many years in Brazil, brought in two oil paintings on canvas. They were from a long time friend of his, Genito Gregório, whom he watched escape poverty and drugs to become an accomplished painter. Jim wanted a modern feel for the harbor scene and something more natural/traditional for the jungle landscape. Same artist, two different design problems. For the more modern feel, Richard suggested a silver float frame. The floater has the appearance of the canvas floating within the confines of the frame. It has a real streamline feel, which lends itself to a modern style. For the jungle landscape, Richard chose an ebony frame, that’s similar to a walnut. It’s richly dark with texture and grain running through it. Truly beautiful without overstating itself. Both approaches worked magnificently. | A mirror is a decorator’s secret weapon. Create a window to reflect your favorite place in your garden, so you may enjoy it indoors as well. You can use mirrors above your bed to create a custom unique headboard. Group framed mirrors together for an artistic touch to any space.
